What is e-filing?
Definition E-filing (electronic filing) is the transmission of a tax return directly to the IRS, and to state tax agencies, through authorized software, instead of mailing paper. For professionals, it runs through the IRS Modernized e-File (MeF) system and requires the preparer to be an authorized e-file provider. The IRS acknowledges acceptance or rejection, usually within hours.
For firms, e-filing is faster, gives confirmation of receipt, and is required above a certain return volume. The capability lives inside professional tax engines (Drake, UltraTax, Lacerte, ProConnect, and others).
