Best AI bookkeeping software for accounting firms in 2026, by the job it is best at
| Tool | Best for | List price | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| LucaLedgerour product | A firm that wants the books, the return, the portal and the workflow in one system | Not published on this page; beta pricing is quoted on the call and locked | Owns the ledger or syncs two-way with QuickBooks Online; statement extraction, confidence-ranked categorization, statement-tied reconciliation, tax preparation from the same books. Does not run payroll, 1099 filing or sales tax filing. SOC 2 ready, not certified. |
| Digits | AI general ledger and real-time reporting as the whole job | Firm plans $35 to $250 per client per month | AI-native ledger with dashboards; a completed SOC 2 Type II report today. Tax preparation and planning are out of scope. |
| Double (formerly Keeper) | Month-end close and file-review QA on top of QuickBooks or Xero | Core $10, Plus $25, Scale $50 per connected client per month; unlimited users | Strong close checklist and client-question workflow; rides on the existing ledger and is not a tax product. |
| Truewind | AI-native monthly close for startups on Sage Intacct, NetSuite or QuickBooks | Not published on the pricing page at the time of the read | A digital staff accountant aimed at venture-backed companies; tax work lives elsewhere. |
| Uncat | One narrow pain: chasing clients on uncategorized transactions | $9 per client per month | Cheap, no client login, does one thing well on top of QuickBooks or Xero. |
| Dext | Receipt and invoice capture feeding QuickBooks or Xero | Essentials from $17.70 and Advanced from $19.20 per client per month, 10-client minimum | Mature capture and vendor rules; the ledger and the categorization decisions stay in QuickBooks or Xero. |
| AutoEntry | Pay-per-document capture with unlimited users | Credit plans from $13 (50 credits) to $469 (2,500 credits) per month | Good for firms with uneven volume; capture only. |
| Hubdoc | Document collection for Xero firms | $12 per month per organization | Bundled into Xero business plans; capture and storage, not categorization judgment. |
| Vic.ai | Autonomous accounts payable at enterprise volume | Not published; enterprise contract | For finance teams processing 1,000 or more invoices a month on NetSuite, Intacct or Dynamics; SOC 2 Type II. Not a small-firm bookkeeping tool. |
How to choose
- Decide whether the ledger moves. If clients stay on QuickBooks or Xero, you are buying a capture or close layer and paying for the ledger too. If the ledger moves, you are buying an AI ledger or an all-in-one system.
- Count the systems. A capture tool plus a close tool plus QuickBooks plus a practice-management platform is four subscriptions and four logins per client. The stack cost model adds them up for a typical firm.
- Ask where the return comes from. Every tool on this list except one hands the trial balance to a tax engine. If your firm prepares returns, that hand-off is where the hours go.
- Check the security paperwork you need. Digits and Vic.ai hold completed SOC 2 Type II reports. LucaLedger describes itself as SOC 2 ready. If a client or insurer requires the report today, that decides it.
- Test on a real client. Upload a month of that client's statements and see what comes back: how many lines need a person, and whether the reconciliation ties.
What we would tell a friend
A bookkeeping-only firm happy on QuickBooks should look at Double first and Uncat if the only pain is uncategorized items. A startup-focused practice on Intacct or NetSuite should look at Truewind. A firm that wants dashboards for clients and has no tax work should look at Digits. A firm that prepares returns for the clients it keeps books for should look at LucaLedger, and should ask us on the call about the things we do not do: payroll, 1099 filing, sales tax, and e-filing before November 2026.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI bookkeeping software for an accounting firm?
It depends on which job you are buying. For a firm that wants one system for books, returns and the client portal, LucaLedger. For an AI ledger with dashboards and a completed SOC 2 Type II report, Digits. For a month-end close layer on top of QuickBooks, Double. For capture alone, Dext or AutoEntry. For one cheap fix to uncategorized transactions, Uncat. The list above says where each one wins.
How much does AI bookkeeping software cost?
Per-client tools run from $9 (Uncat) to $250 (Digits' top firm plan) a client a month; capture tools from $12 to $20 a client or a credit bundle; the enterprise tools are contract-priced. Add the ledger itself where the tool rides on QuickBooks or Xero: $27 to $238 a client at the accountant discount, or $3 to $90 on Xero partner plans.
Does AI bookkeeping replace a bookkeeper?
It replaces the keying and the first pass at categorization. A person still approves, decides exceptions and signs off month-end. The firms on our customers page kept their people and gave them back the hours.
Which of these do tax returns?
Only LucaLedger prepares the return from the same books. The others hand off to a tax engine, which is where re-keying the trial balance comes back.
