You must pay estimated tax if you expect to owe $500 or more in Minnesota income tax for the year after subtracting Minnesota withholding and refundable credits.

Farmers and commercial fishermen (two-thirds of gross income from farming or fishing) owe no penalty if they pay the entire tax by March 1 of the following year or two-thirds of it by January 15. The January 15 payment is not needed if you file the return and pay in full by January 31.
