You must pay estimated income tax if the tax shown due on your return, reduced by North Carolina tax withheld and allowable credits, is $1,000 or more.

The January 15 payment is not required if Form D-400 is filed and the balance paid by January 31. Farmers and commercial fishermen may pay in full by January 15 or file and pay by March 1. Underpayment interest is computed on Form D-422.
